SCRO at the 11th Annual HBCU Climate Change Conference

The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ), in collaboration with the Bullard Center at Texas Southern University, hosted the 11th Annual HBCU Climate Change Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, from March 18–21, 2026. This year’s gathering brought together students, community leaders, researchers, and advocates to address some of the most urgent environmental and climate justice issues facing frontline communities.  SCRO was proudly represented by: Debra Walker, President, Jo Ann Burbridge, Vice-President, and Chloe Weber, Community Disaster Plan Development Consultant.

They were joined by students from the Bullard Center at Texas Southern University and a student from Elizabeth City State University.


Presentations & Achievements

Chloe Weber delivered a powerful presentation titled “Building Resilience From the Ground Up: Community‑Led Climate Preparedness in Houston’s Frontline Neighborhoods.” Her talk highlighted the framework she is developing for SCRO’s community disaster plan, emphasizing grassroots engagement and community resilience.

Caszhmere Chaison presented her research on air quality in Houston’s Sunnyside community, using data collected from SCRO’s air monitoring network. Her work stood out among conference participants, she earned 1st place in the poster competition, a tremendous accomplishment.
