About Us

The Sunnyside Community Redevelopment Organization (SCRO) is a Houston-based environmental justice organization that works to protect the health and well-being of the Sunnyside neighborhood.

 

Sunnyside is a largely Black and Hispanic neighborhood that has been historically overburdened by environmental pollution. The SCRO works to address these issues through advocacy, education, and community organizing.


The SCRO is working to make Sunnyside a healthier and more just community. By addressing the environmental issues that the neighborhood faces, the SCRO is helping to improve the lives of its residents.

Our Story

The story of Sunnyside Community Redevelopment Organization begins with the recognition of the challenges faced by the Sunnyside neighborhood. Historically, Sunnyside has been an underserved community with limited resources and opportunities for its residents.

 

In response to these challenges, a group of passionate community members came together with the goal of revitalizing and improving Sunnyside. They believed that through collaborative efforts and strategic development, They created the Sunnyside Comprehensive Plan 

they could create a brighter future for their neighborhood.

 

In 2017, the Sunnyside Community Redevelopment Organization was established as a nonprofit organization. Since its inception, the organization has been committed to addressing the pressing issues that affect Sunnyside. SCRO has performed an Need Assessment in Sunnyside.

 

One of the key focuses of Sunnyside Community Redevelopment Organization is affordable housing. Recognizing the importance of safe and affordable housing for a thriving community, the organization has worked diligently to develop and maintain affordable housing options for residents.

 

In addition to affordable housing, the organization also emphasizes economic development.

Our vision is to monitor, correct and make equitable the environment problems and other high-risk factors that affect the well being of our community. Every community needs a safe, secure sustainable and healthy neighborhood in which residents are to live.
